A second version of Responding to Customers in Financial Hardship: Principles and Practices for Telecommunications Service Providers was released today following a consultative process including telecommunications industry and financial counselling representatives with the assistance of the Telecommunications Industry Ombudsman.
Telecommunications Industry Ombudsman (TIO) Simon Cohen has welcomed the release of a Federal Government discussion paper examining opportunities to reform the TIO scheme.
“The Telecommunications Industry Ombudsman scheme plays a vital role in consumer protection in the telecommunications industry, assisting customers and service providers to resolve individual disputes and advising industry on best practice,” Mr Cohen said.
“It’s important to regularly review the Ombudsman scheme, to ensure we are providing the maximum benefit to the community and industry.”

The Independent Review into the Telecommunication Industry Ombudsman recommends the organisation strengthens its role investigating systemic issues within the telecommunications sector.
The Review, released today (15 December 2017), also reflects the current environment of dynamic change in policy, technology, consumer engagement and the social sphere of the telecommunications industry.
The Board of the Telecommunications Industry Ombudsman Limited today announced the appointment of Ms Judi Jones as the new Ombudsman.
Ms Jones will assume responsibilities in March 2016 and will succeed Mr Simon Cohen, who has taken up a senior role with the Victorian Government.
In making the announcement, Ms Patricia Faulkner AO, the Chair of the Board of the TIO, noted Ms Jones’ extensive experience in alternative dispute resolution, management and the law and welcomed her to the role.
The Telecommunications Industry Ombudsman welcomes the penalties awarded in Federal Court proceedings by the Australian Communications and Media Authority (ACMA) against Limni Enterprises Pty Ltd (formerly Red Telecom Pty Ltd) and its sole director Nicholas Kontaxis for failure to comply with Ombudsman decisions.
The revised Guidelines reflect changes to the code, determination, and recent case law and will be effective from 14 April 2022.

Geoff Nicholson will join as an Independent Director in February 2016, after a recruitment process that began in late 2015, replacing long-serving Independent Director Jane Harvey who is retiring from the TIO Board.
