The telecommunications sector does not have a registration, authorisation, or licensing scheme for service providers that sell directly to consumers. Providers should be required to demonstrate they can satisfy the minimum capabilities required to deliver such an essential service to consumers in Australia.
The Australian Competition and Consumer Commission (ACCC) has announced Dodo, iPrimus and Commander have agreed to offer remedies to their customers who were misled about maximum speeds they could achieve on certain NBN plans.
The ACCC is responsible for enforcing this undertaking.
Dodo, iPrimus and Commander have until 27 April 2018 to notify affected customers by email or letter.

In August and September 2017, professionals working with those facing financial hardship throughout Western Australia were surveyed. These staff demonstrate frontline expertise and experience over a considerable number of years. As well as understanding the challenges of financial hardship, the financial counsellors are also knowledgeable on the particular issues facing Western Australians. Those surveyed are all members of Financial Counsellors Association of Western Australia.

Almost half of Queensland’s community legal sector workers have reported hearing from their clients about a phone or internet problem every week, a new report published jointly by the Telecommunications Industry Ombudsman and Community Legal Centres Queensland, highlights today (Friday 9 March 2018).

A trend of complaints to the Telecommunications Industry Ombudsman has revealed a ‘question and answer service’ is asking consumers to pay to have their phone or internet complaint fixed.

Residential consumers and small businesses made 132,387 complaints to the Telecommunications Industry Ombudsman, highlighted in the Annual Report 2018-19 published today (25 September 2019).
However, complaints returning as unresolved - where the consumer and provider could not reach resolution - took longer to close. This year, 47 per cent of escalated complaints were closed within 60 days, compared to 2017-18 when this figure was 77 per cent.
Telco complaints to the TIO as a proportion of services in operation (SIO) dropped 3.1 per cent in the July-September quarter to 6.2 complaints per 10,000 services in operation (SIO).
This represents a 16.4 per cent increase on the 5.5 complaints per 10,000 SIO during the same period in 2015. The quarterly figure is 22 percent lower than when reporting began in 2013.
The July-September reduction was driven by improvements in the number of complaints per SIO for both Telstra and Optus.
The research, produced via a partnership between the Consumer Policy Research Centre (CPRC) and the TIO unearthed a suite of sobering assessments in relation to the vulnerability of the consumer market in the telecommunications industry.
The CPRC research revealed that 55 percent of Australians have experienced at least one problem with their telco in the last year – but of the quantum, 77 percent of customers chose not to make a complaint due to a sense that the process would be overwhelming.
