The Telecommunications Industry Ombudsman Simon Cohen has welcomed the release of the Department of Broadband, Communications and the Digital Economy’s Reform of the Telecommunications Industry Ombudsman (TIO) report.
“I am pleased with the findings that the TIO generally meets the National Benchmarks for industry Ombudsman and that we deal with consumer complaints well,” Ombudsman Simon Cohen said.

Consumers are being given important new information to help them compare the performance of Australia’s top telcos and make more informed choices.
The Complaints in Context report, jointly released today by the Telecommunications Industry Ombudsman (TIO) and industry peak body Communications Alliance, shows the number of TIO complaints received per telco as a proportion of that telco’s services in operation.
Five telcos – Telstra, Optus, Vodafone, iiNet and amaysim – volunteered to participate in the report.
The Telecommunications Industry Ombudsman’s Quarter 2 (Q2) 2020-21 Complaints Report shows while the number of complaints from small businesses decreased compared to the previous quarter, the proportion increased to 17 per cent of total complaints. This is the highest proportion of phone and internet complaints from small businesses in the last five quarters.
2023 has been a year of improvement for the TIO. We’ve refined our processes through implementation of the 2022 Independent Review recommendations, continued our fairness and satisfaction surveys about our service, ensuring that we are delivering a fair and independent service, and launched our new complaint handling platform as part of our technology transformation project. The Telecommunications Industry Ombudsman (TIO) has reported for the first time on NBN-related complaints in its Annual Report, released today.
Consumers made 3,982 new NBN-related complaints during the 2013-14 financial year. Most were about new connection delays, with 1,122 internet users and 783 landline consumers reporting a delay. More than 500 consumers complained about missed appointments.
