Submission to the Consumer Safeguards Review Part C: Choice and fairness

15 October 2020

In the submission to Part C of the Consumer Safeguards Review, the Telecommunications Industry Ombudsman supports reforms to strengthen consumer protections and improve accountability in Australia’s telecommunications market.

This submission outlines changes to regulation, enforcement and industry oversight that would help deliver fairer outcomes for consumers and greater confidence in the sector.

Key recommendations include consolidating important consumer protection rules into a clearer regulatory framework, strengthening protections for consumers experiencing financial hardship or vulnerability, and enhancing the Australian Communications and Media Authority’s compliance and enforcement powers.

The TIO also advocates for a telecommunications provider registration scheme to improve visibility, accountability and oversight of market participants.

The submission emphasises that effective regulation, supported by targeted industry self-regulation and better market transparency, is essential to promoting fair competition, protecting consumers and improving trust in telecommunications services.
