What is a SIM swap?
A SIM swap happens when someone takes control of your mobile number by convincing your provider to move it to a new SIM card they control.
They usually pretend to be you and use personal details like your date of birth or address to pass security checks.
Once they take over your number, they can receive your calls and texts — including security codes used to log in to your bank, email or social media accounts.
You might first notice something is wrong when your mobile service suddenly stops working.
