1. Scams campaign helps boost consumer awareness

Four areas are being publicised in this month’s "Scams Target You" campaign, an initiative of the Australian Consumer Fraud Taskforce. The taskforce is asking people to protect their money, protect their phone, protect their computer and protect their identity.

The taskforce, established in March 2005, consists of 18 Government regulatory agencies and departments who have a responsibility for consumer protection in relation to frauds and scams.

The purpose of the taskforce is to:
•  work together to enhance the Australian and New Zealand Governments’ enforcement activity against frauds and scams
•  to create a yearly co-ordinated information campaign for consumers timed to coincide with Global Consumer Fraud Prevention Month
•  involve the private sector in the initiative and
•  share information and generate greater interest in research on consumer frauds and scams.

The Telecommunications Industry Ombudsman scheme can assist consumers in some areas covered by the taskforce. However, as the TIO is a complaint handling body of last resort, consumers should try to resolve a problem with their telecommunications or internet service provider before contacting the TIO.

Further information on "Scams Target You" may be obtained from www.scamwatch.gov.au.
