  4. New Deputy Ombudsman

Simon Cleary began work as Deputy Telecommunications Ombudsman in February. Simon’s association with the TIO began when he joined the Council in 2002 as a consumer representative.

Before his appointment as Deputy Ombudsman, Simon was a lawyer with Legal Aid Queensland, and before that a consumer credit and debt lawyer at the Redfern Legal Centre in Sydney. Simon was a founding member of the Centre for Credit and Consumer Law at Griffith University, and of the Queensland Public Interest Law Clearing House.

The Ombudsman, Mr John Pinnock, welcomed Simon to the TIO saying he would bring several important strengths to the Scheme.“Through his work with the TIO Council, Simon has an excellent understanding of the key role that the TIO plays within the industry.

In his previous positions, he became acutely aware of the issues faced by telecommunications consumers. He has also played an integral part in translating case work and systemic problems into legal reforms. Simon is well regarded within the industry as a professional and a person of integrity.”
