Malicious software warning from ACMA

28 June 2012

The Australian Communications and Media Authority (ACMA) recently issued a media release about the impact of a malicious software (malware) called “DNSChanger” to internet users (http://www.acma.gov.au/WEB/STANDARD/pc=PC_410397).

The ACMA estimates that 7,000 to 7,500 Australian internet users have devices that are either infected with the DNSChanger malware or are continuing to use rogue DNS settings installed by the malware.

An interim arrangement, which has enabled infected devices to continue to access the internet for the last two years, is due to end on 9 July 2012 and users may be unable to access the internet on their devices after this date.

Consumers are able to check whether their devices are infected with the malware or have rogue DNS settings by visiting the Australian Government’s “DNSChanger Diagnostic” facility at http://www.dns-ok.gov.au/.

The TIO anticipates increased customer contacts about their inability to access the internet after 9 July 2012, and encourages Members to take reasonable steps to reduce consumer detriment associated with the malware.
