The Telecommunications Industry Ombudsman is this week celebrating 10 years of consumer dispute resolution.

Having opened for business on the 1st of December 1993, the TIO has since handled more than half a million consumer enquiries and complaints about telecommunications services.

In its first year of operation, the TIO’s 9 full-time staff handled a total of 10,624 complaints and enquiries about the TIO’s 3 member companies – Telecom, Optus and Vodafone.

Today the TIO has 910 member companies and last year its 61 full and part-time staff handled an astonishing 72,000 complaints and enquiries.

To mark the ten-year milestone, the TIO will host a conference on Tuesday 25 November 2003 at the Victoria University Conference Centre in Melbourne. The conference will address future challenges for regulation of the communications industries.

The keynote speaker will be Richard Hooper, Deputy Chair of OfCom, the UK’s new media and communications regulator.

Other speakers include Paul Budde from Budde Communications, Dr Bob Horton, Acting Chair of the Australian Communications Authority, Gavin Dufty from the Society of St Vincent de Paul, Chris Field from the Consumer Law Centre, Deena Shiff from Telstra Wholesale, Jock Given from Swinburne University and Garry Barker from The Age Newspaper.
