TIO Celebrates 10 Years

The Telecommunications Industry Ombudsman is this week celebrating
10 years of consumer dispute resolution.
Having opened for business on the 1st of December 1993, the TIO
has since handled more than half a million consumer enquiries
and complaints about telecommunications services.
In its first year of operation, the TIO’s 9 full-time staff
handled a total of 10,624 complaints and enquiries about the TIO’s
3 member companies – Telecom, Optus and Vodafone.
Today the TIO has 910 member companies and last year its 61 full
and part-time staff handled an astonishing 72,000 complaints and
enquiries.
To mark the ten-year milestone, the TIO will host a conference
on Tuesday 25 November 2003 at the Victoria University Conference
Centre in Melbourne. The conference will address future challenges
for regulation of the communications industries.
The keynote speaker will be Richard Hooper, Deputy Chair of OfCom,
the UK’s new media and communications regulator.
Other speakers include Paul Budde from Budde Communications,
Dr Bob Horton, Acting Chair of the Australian Communications Authority,
Gavin Dufty from the Society of St Vincent de Paul, Chris Field
from the Consumer Law Centre, Deena Shiff from Telstra Wholesale,
Jock Given from Swinburne University and Garry Barker from The
Age Newspaper.
